Column: off the record..., vol. 8-327

Matt McGee
As I write this, I'm watching my new U2 DVD. No, not Live at Red Rocks.
It's simply called U2 Live, and it's a DVD of U2's performance at Rockpalast
in Germany in August, 1983. You may remember a news bit on our home page that
this concert is/was streaming live on the web a couple weeks ago; the DVD is
the exact same footage, and it's nice to have it on DVD and not have to fight
online video streaming/buffering issues.
It's a strange release -- obviously unauthorized and unofficial. The cover
shows an Elevation-era photo of the band, and there's nothing inside other than
the DVD itself; no booklet, not even a single sheet of information. Very low
budget. But get this: It's the first time a single U2 concert is available
from start to finish, no songs missing, no edits from other concerts, etc.
Want your own copy of the DVD? It's only about $11
(USD) right now at CD Universe. And I haven't seen it available anywhere
else. (Email me if you have.)
I spent most of last week answering questions about U2 - A Diary.
The interview
contest was much more popular than I expected it to be, which is very cool.
At some point during the day Monday, I'll be posting again on U2diary.com with
a full list of the interviews that were done, and asking you to read them and
then vote for which one is the best interview. (Update: Full list is posted.) The winner of the best interview
gets a free copy of the book and a $50 Amazon.com or iTunes (U.S.) gift certificate.
So, if you're reading this on Monday (or later in the week), pay a quick visit
over to U2diary.com and look for the list
of contest entries and help choose a winner. Kthx.
A week or two ago we posted on our home page about a Daniel Lanois quote on
Canadian radio, where he talked about mixing the U2 album in New York and the
album almost being finished. Well, our friend Todd R. listened to the exact
quote and tells us this is what Lanois said:
Lanois says he'll be mixing "HALF the U2 record" in a weeks time
and that it's "a good start to being finished."
Half the record? Isn't that the strangest thing? Well, I'm just gonna throw
this out there, and you can make of it whatever you want: At one point earlier
this year, we heard a rumor that No Line On The Horizon was going to
be a double album.
The things that make you go Hmmmmmmm......
Quick site news update: We're in the final stages of installing and testing
out our new @U2 Forum. Feedback from our beta testers so far has been good.
Status updates on the upgrade will be posted on the existing
(soon to be "old") forum.
And finally ... since you've always wondered how "Vertigo" would
sound as a mid-tempo, soft rock/pop tune, here's former Australian Idol contestant
Nathaniel Willemse letting
you know.
Until next time...
