Except that U2 would still be in Dublin without the influence of the Beatles.
true..... however I still don't think the Beatles qualify as "best rock band ever". just because they were the first to do it doesn't mean they are the best. I think the Rolling Stones are the best band of all time. Them and the Who, and Led Zeppelin.
I'll even quote guitar legend Pete Townshend:
"Well, me and John were listening to a Stereo Beatles LP. Their voices came out of one channel, and the backing track out of the other. Without their voices their flippin' lousy."
Mind you, this is guitar god Pete Townshend.
My conclusion: The Beatles are the best Pop band of all-time. To have some great songs, you need guitar solos. Without that, how are you able to put yourself within the limits of rock? Guitar, drums, bass guitar, and a singer. Sure, the Beatles had that, but so doesn't every pop band too. Here's how to show the Beatles were a pop band, not a rock band:
Guitars: Where are the good guitar solos? Do something with the guitar! Even Bono has them beat. Denied
Bass Guitar: Acceptable, but at the lowest level. You know you're listening to a rock band when you listen just for the bass guitar. Denied, just not enough.
Drums: A joke. Denied.
Vocals + Lyrics: The only thing the Beatles were actually good at. Passed.
So the Beatles earn 1/4 on my rock band qualifier. 25%. They're a great pop band, but to call them a real rock band just doesn't work.
Besides, doesn't the Boy album from the era of punk rock (punk rock is influienced by the Who )
